The Wish List – our project for the London Design Festival
Benchmark and American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) with the London Design Festival, have invited ten design legends along with ten emerging talents, to design and make something they have always wanted, but have never been able to find. The Wish List will be exhibited at the V&A during the 2014 London Design Festival (13-21 September).
Terence Conran instigated the project when he wrote to his friends and asked, “What have you always wanted in your home, but never been able to find?”
The Wish List line up comprises of some of the greatest architects and designers of our time, whom to our great fortune said yes. And, for those younger designers who were chosen and paired up with their commissioner, a dream come true.
The commissioners are: Alex de Rijke, Alison Brooks, Allen Jones, Amanda Levete, John Pawson, Norman Foster, Richard and Ab Rogers, Terence Conran, and Zaha Hadid.
The designers are: Barnby & Day, Felix de Pass, Gregory Epps, Lola Lely, Nathalie de Leval, Norie Matsumoto, Sebastian Cox, Studio Areti, Win Assakul, and Xenia Moseley.
All the pieces will be crafted in American hardwood during ‘making week’ at Benchmark at the beginning of July. With such an open brief, the designs and techniques involved will be wide-ranging and the challenge is set to make from sketch to finished product in one intense week. Our 50 strong mastercraftsmen will be on hand to make their vision a reality and put to the test their in-depth knowledge of wood.
Working with AHEC on ‘Out of the Woods’ in 2012, Benchmark produced the world’s first wooden furniture with full Life Cycle Analysis (LCA). Here, we continue our fascination with this fast-developing science. For each Wish List object made, we will be able to assess the environmental impact as a measure of true sustainability.
Material used for this project has been donated from timber and panel products distributor James Latham.
