Our Norfolk goes to Fulham…

Our contemporary outdoor seating, designed by  the award winning Wales & Wales, has graced the streets of Central London for several years including St Paul’s Cathedral, London Barbican and Blackfriars.  More recently, our pieces have ventured further south to the revitalised Catford Broadway and west to Fulham Reach…

In collaboration with Lewisham Council, Volker highways and BDP Architects, we developed seating for both Catford Broadway and Catford Market who are recipients of over £1.5 million of funding from the Mayor of London to fund a number of improvements designed to attract more people to the area. This included a complete refurbishment of the street, with new lighting and seating.  Bespoke benches for the scheme had been designed by BDP Architects, and Volker Highways were looking for a specialist timber manufacturer to implement the designs.  We offered to develop a hybrid of our standard Chico bench. This included double aspect benches and angled benches, as well as a special small bench for children.

Given that lead times were challenging (the designs were developed in just over two weeks), using the Wales & Wales Chico designs as a starting point offered the advantage of using tried and tested ergonomics and also a proven ground fixing system, both vital factors for any external public realm seating project. We are now working with Volker Highways on a similar project in Camden.

At Fulham Reach, the challenge was more technical. This time it was the turn of our Norfolk bench, selected by property developer St George plc for a prestigious new development of residential apartments on the River Thames. Our standard Norfolk is a straight bench but for this project, it needed to be curved to suit the large circular terraced garden requiring a change in timber to air dried FSC oak and new steam bending techniques to create the curves.
