Introducing the Lath and the Shake
Our new designs by Sebastian Cox launch today at Clerkenwell Design Week. The CHESTNUT AND ASH range harnesses sustainable crops of coppiced chestnut, well-managed ash and the ancient skill of cleaving – the controlled splitting of wood along its grain. We’ve combined these with contemporary furniture making techniques to create a collection with a simple and textural aesthetic. This collection sits where traditional meets modern; honestly showing how the tree grew, how the pieces are constructed and how the hands of the craftsman made them.
The LATH CHAIR is our modern interpretation of the traditional ladder-back chair. The fine cleft laths that make the ladder-back are split from freshly coppiced chestnut and the frame is made from well-managed ash, CNC cut for accuracy. It is light, strong and bears the hand of its maker. Available with two seat options: stretched veg-tan leather, or Danish cord.
For the LATH BENCH and LATH COFFEE TABLE, vegetable-tanned leather has been stretched over chestnut laths. A smooth ash frame carries the skin-and-bone seating/top. The more you use this piece, the more the leather will wear around the laths and the more it becomes yours. The bench is available with two upholstery options: stretched veg-tan leather or Danish cord.
The SHAKE CABINET and SHAKE SIDEBOARD have a solid dovetailed ash carcass and doors made from cleft chestnut shakes. These are skillfully split as thinly as possible to keep the doors light and full of texture.
