INfluence at London Design Festival: Promoting design across continents
INfluence is an exhibition of contemporary Indian Design which brings together six of India’s best contemporary design studios with five leading architectural practices from London to examine ‘influence’ and why Indian culture plays an important role in the making of the modern world.
Curated by Arpna Gupta from Create Culture and Christoper Egret from Studio Egret West, the five installations by Project Orange, ACME, Studio [D] Tale, Haptic and Studio Egret West are inspired by the chaos and beauty of Indian street life and take their cue from the five senses. Inspired by Indian traditions of extreme recycling where reusing and re-purposing is a fundamental part of the culture, each is formed by the creative re-use of the mundane and everyday.
The table that Project Orange have commissioned us to make uses fragments of motifs that they have developed for their own projects in India to create a collage. We are laser cutting the collage into the surface of the table and will then in-fill with off-cuts of veneer and laminate that would otherwise be wasted. Hand-painted Athangudi tiles are being used for the place settings.
