Design for Good: A year-long Fixperts Residency at Benchmark
Fixperts is about fixing for someone. It is a creative social platform and education project that invites people who are good at making and repair to fix for others.
Not-for-profit Fixperts was started by designers Daniel Charny (curator of the seminal Power of Making) and James Carrigan (co-founder of Sugru) with a group of volunteers from Kingston University and the Royal College of Art. Since 2012, Fixperts has developed programmes in several universities as well as school initiatives, and has created over 150 projects in 17 countries. Each project, which applies creative skills to solve problems, is shared on an online platform to inspire others to do the same. Making an immediate difference to peoples lives, examples of projects include a custom made fastener for 82 year old Bob with a rheumatic condition who wants to close his buttons himself; a belt that can be closed with one hand for post stroke wheelchair user John; a floating feeder for ducks at Barnes Wetlands to help cope with changing water levels and pesky pigeons!
Here at Benchmark, we care deeply about making and we firmly believe that fixing is a valuable creative and social resource. We are really inspired by the Fixperts team and what they have achieved so far and want to be part of this force for change. That is why we are offering a Fixperts Residency here at Benchmark. It will launch at Clerkenwell Design Week (19-21 May) and starts in September. This is the inaugural residency and we’re hoping that it will inspire other companies to do the same. We believe that by sharing our knowledge, skills and facilities, the making of Fixperts projects will be enhanced
The residency will be a full time placement for a graduate in a relevant discipline (eg design, craft, engineering). There will be a generous stipend to cover basic living costs and we’ll give help in finding lodgings if required. The successful applicant will have access to our workshop and tools as well as mentoring and advice from our craftsmen. A Fixperts mentor will guide the content of the Fixperts projects.
